As a parent of a few younger kids, I am always pushing my kids towards more toys and less screens. I don’t want them scrolling YouTube videos, and I don’t want them playing video games nonstop. In moderation, those things are great, but day-to-day, I prefer to see more screen less playtime than screen time.
Enter the Toniebox 2, a pretty solid device we’ve been using for a few weeks now. During our review period, we’ve looked at a ton of accessories as well, so let’s check out the various things we tried out.
My kids go nuts for plush toys, and so when I saw that Tonie offered plush Tonie figures, I definitely wanted to try them out. The plush toy isn’t quite as good as a standard plush since there is a magnet in the base that connects to the Toniebox itself. That said, it’s still a detailed toy, and one my kids play with even when not listening to the music or the various Winnie the Pooh books.
The Winnie the Pooh Cuddle Tonie has 39 minutes of runtime, and includes 8 tracks: 7 stories and one soundscape track to help kids fall asleep.
Judy Hops is in the building. Zootopia is one of my kids’ favourite movie franchises from Disney, and this Tonie offers stories of both movies, and two popular songs from Shakira: Try Everything and Zoo. The voice acting for the stories is phenomenal; while most of the story is just the narrator, the voices of favorite characters like Judy, Nick, Chief Bogo, and more are well done, giving the story just a little extra pep. The audio quality here is quite good as well.
The Judy figure itself has lots of details that won’t only delight a kid, but the parents as well. What I like about these plastic Tonie figures is that they look great on display. The runtime for this Tonie is about 49 minutes.
The majority of things we looked at when reviewing the Toniebox 2 were aimed at kids, but the Wonder Tonie was a different thing entirely. This is a Tonie that is great for the whole family.
If you’ve never read or heard the story of Wonder, it will make you laugh and cry. It is one of the most impactful stories I’ve ever read, and as we listened to it again as a family, the story itself invoked a lot of emotion.
When compared to the Zootopia Tonie, you are getting a lot more bang for your buck. While the Tonie is the same price, $19.99 USD, there is 430 minutes of content on this figure, which easily surpasses the 49 minutes of Zootopia and the 39 minutes on Winnie the Pooh. The detail on this figure is fantastic as well, and brings the character to life just like the author would have wanted.
My kids like Captain Underpants as much as the next, and to have these available as books for their Toniebox 2 is great. With over 230 minutes of runtime spread across 4 books, there is plenty of Captain Underpants enjoyment in this $39.99 USD package. Unlike the other Tonie accessories we have reviewed, this one doesn’t come with little plastic figures; instead, each book gets its own book-shaped Tonie, which nicely settles on the Toniebox 2, and plays whatever book is loaded to that Tonie.
These book Tonie figures were definitely more appealing to my wife and me, but my kids probably wish this were a Captain Underpants figure. I understand the logic of why this isn’t the case – each book is its own Tonie, and you need to be able to tell them apart as there are 4 of them.
Still, I found this to be a solid package. The storytelling is phenomenal, and will definitely keep kids engaged for hours on end.
There are a lot of screen-free products available to purchase, and the Toniebox 2 is just one of many. That said, this device is very tactile – it’s all about the feel and the look. For younger kids, I think this is a much better option than devices that simply just use cards. Not only do the Tonie figures hold the stories and music they will listen to, but they can be played with. The downside is you will be paying a bit more per experience due to the stories and music coming on plastic figurines.
Another problem with these figures is storage. We have a bin where we store ours, right below where our Toniebox 2 device sits, and there are always a few figures on display around the bookshelf. I am concerned that at some point my child is going to lose one since it does double as a toy he could play with. I can easily see him walking around the house with a figure, setting it down, and forgetting in the future where he put it.
With a bit of parent oversight, I think keeping these Tonies organized and available is still possible, and if you are looking for a device that doesn’t just use digital purchases but rather something that is more akin to a toy, the Toniebox has the market cornered on that.
