Jacob has been gaming since the original Game Boy was placed in his hands. Due to his passion for the field, writing talent, and a keen eye for SEO, he made his games journalism debut in 2019. When he isn’t playing the latest titles, he is tinkering with retro tech to bring it into the modern era.
Souls-likes are naturally still being made in droves thanks to the mass appeal of the genre, and another to add to the list is Mortal Shell 2.
If you’re not sure what this one is all about or are looking for additional details on the release, we’ve got what you need to know.
What is Mortal Shell 2?
Mortal Shell 2 is the standalone sequel to 2020’s Mortal Shell, once again dropping you into challenging fights, as you face up to rather unpleasant-looking enemies.
As you’d expect, developer Cold Symmetry is going significantly bigger this time around, introducing an interconnected open world with more of a focus on free exploration.
Combat has also been expanded, with deeper weapon upgrade options and a more unrestricted approach to fighting than in the original.

The signature Shell mechanic returns too, allowing you to possess different fallen warriors and make use of their individual abilities and combat styles.
If you haven’t played the original, the good news is that Mortal Shell 2 is a standalone sequel, meaning you shouldn’t need to have completed the first game before jumping in, although getting a feel for the mechanics could be wise.
What is the Mortal Shell 2 release date?
Mortal Shell 2 launches on August 20, 2026 and three days prior to that if you pick up the Devout Edition since it comes bundled with early access.
However, you don’t have to wait until the game launches to experience what it has to offer. There’s a beta you can get downloaded that’ll allow you to play through the opening Prologue, as well as an early portion of the open world.
What platforms is Mortal Shell 2 on?
If you do want to get a taste of what Mortal Shell 2 has to offer, you’ll be happy to know that it’s not a platform exclusive.
The game is available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 so as long as you’re on the newer gen train, you’ll be able to play this Souls-like sequel.
Is Mortal Shell 2 on Game Pass?
Even though its predecessor did make its way onto Xbox’s game subscription service, Mortal Shell 2 is not on Game Pass, at least at launch anyway.
There’s nothing to say it won’t get added later down the line but it will not be a day one addition.
