A new report from Bloomberg has alleged Ubisoft’s founding Guillemot family is currently working alongside tech conglomerate Tencent to create a “new venture” that would include “certain Ubisoft assets.” This move would aim to boost Ubisoft’s value, after several years of financial disappointment.

In early January 2025, Ubisoft confirmed its own plans to “reshape” its business to “deliver best-in-class player experiences, enhance operational efficiency and maximise value creation.” As part of this change, it appointed “leading advisors” to “review and pursue various transformational strategic and capitalistic options to extract the best value for stakeholders.”

While Ubisoft had previously expressed a desire to remain independent, this aforementioned “reshape” left open the possibility of the company being purchased, with Tencent being rumoured as one of the interested parties.

Per Bloomberg, there may be more evidence for these rumours, as Tencent and the Guillemot family are allegedly in ongoing negotiations to split up Ubisoft’s assets to form a stronger entity. Sources speaking to the website believed a potential deal would allow Tencent some degree of ownership over Ubisoft’s intellectual property, while also allowing the company to gain a larger foothold in the global video games business.

A final decision about Ubisoft’s future has reportedly not been made yet, but negotiations do appear to be continuing.

When asked for comment on the situation by Bloomberg, Tencent reportedly declined to answer, and Ubisoft simply pointed to its early January announcement for more context. Notably, in this announcement, Ubisoft confirmed it would share more “once a transaction materialises.”

Given negotiations have reportedly been ongoing since around October 2024, when Ubisoft’s share price dipped, we can expect to see results in the near future. Should the negotiations with Tencent have progressed significantly, it could mean a very different Ubisoft going forward.

For now, the company plans to move ahead as usual, with the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows on 20 March 2025 likely being a major focus, and possible turning point. Stay tuned for more on developments at Ubisoft as they progress.
