After the successful release of Death Stranding 2 and with the upcoming remake of what many consider to be Kojima’s magnum opus, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, all eyes are on what the famous auteur will do next. Fortunately, there are a few different answers. Next up looks like the experimental Xbox exclusive OD, which is being developed in collaboration with filmmaker Jordan Peele.
However, announced in January 2024 was Physint, a PlayStation exclusive that looked to carry on the legacy of the Metal Gear Solid series through a revolutionising of the stealth genre. It was explained as being something that would begin in earnest after the release of Death Stranding 2, but now that this day has come and gone, what’s Kojima got to say on the matter?
The Timeline for Physint
Back in May, Kojima said that Physint would likely take him another five or six years to complete, giving audiences a rough time window of when to expect the game. However, he’s recently made it clear in an interview with IndieWire that he’s currently the only person working on the game, and that it’s very much in the conceptual stages. He also made it clear, though, that he doesn’t consider his work on Death Stranding 2 quite finished – he’s still doing press tours for the game and working to refine the player experience based on player data.
What about OD?
With that in mind, players might understandably give Physint some breathing room and instead turn their attention to what’s seemingly next in the pipeline. However, while Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid are games that can be defined by recognisable genres, OD looks to be attempting to blur the lines between mediums, creating something more multimedia in the process. While development was delayed due to the release of Death Stranding 2 and the SAG-AFTRA video game strike, it was confirmed to have resumed development in August 2025.
Will it be like Metal Gear Solid?
For fans of Kojima’s original, iconic franchise, Death Stranding might have veered away from what they were familiar with. The description of Physint as being an evolution of the espionage genre, as well as the way that Kojima talks about it in interviews draws inevitable comparisons to Metal Gear Solid. It’s too early to say how similar it will ultimately be, whether it will include certain mechanical or thematic elements seen in those games or whether it will only be unified by genre, but with Death Stranding 2 out in the wild, audiences might not have to wait long to know more.
