Xbox Insiders can now stream games by buying prepaid cloud playtime without a Game Pass subscription, following Microsoft’s announcement on Xbox Wire on 21 October 2026.
The introductory pricing sits at three tiers: US$3.99 for 10 hours of streaming, US$7.99 for 25 hours and US$11.99 for 50 hours. At the top tier that works out to roughly US$0.40 an hour. Xbox labels these “introductory launch pricing”, which means the figures could change before the option reaches everyone else.
Team Xbox says the packs are ad-free and come with shorter wait times and high-quality streaming. “Cloud playtime packs provide an ad-free cloud gaming experience, including shorter wait times, high-quality streaming, and playtime that remains available until it’s used.”
Bought hours do not expire, so a 10-hour pack can sit unused until the player wants it. There is one big catch: buying playtime does not grant access to Xbox’s game library. Players must already own an eligible cloud-playable game or use a supported free-to-play title, on a supported device.
What changes for Game Pass members
The packs arrive in the same month Xbox begins capping cloud streaming for Game Pass subscribers, ending the unlimited streaming the higher tiers previously included. From November, Game Pass Ultimate members get 15 hours of cloud streaming a month, Premium 10 hours and Essential 5.
Microsoft estimates the caps will affect about 4% of Game Pass subscribers, though it has not explained how it arrived at that figure. Insiders without a subscription can still stream for free with ads, in sessions capped at one hour and limited to games they already own.
A November rollout for everyone else
The preview is limited to Xbox Insiders ahead of a broader rollout planned for November. Xbox says availability, purchasing options, eligible games and features may vary by market, device, account eligibility and preview ring, so not every Insider will see the packs immediately.
The packs require no monthly commitment, which suits players who stream only occasionally. The wider rollout is set for November 2026.
