Deadlock’s City Never Sleeps Run Clears 300,000 Players

Violet’s arrival has pushed Deadlock past 300,000 concurrent players for another all-time peak, extending the record-setting run of its City Never Sleeps update. Valve’s MOBA-shooter hybrid is still in early development, but the steady climb with each new hero has given players a fresh reason to jump back in.

Violet is the fifth of six heroes planned for City Never Sleeps. Her release follows a pattern established during the update: each new hero has coincided with a higher peak in players online at the same time. The ongoing Deadlock hero additions have made the rollout a series of milestones, not just a one-off spike.

A record with every hero release

The figures reported across the City Never Sleeps rollout show how the peak has grown. The update launched alongside a major map overhaul, and subsequent hero releases have continued to lift Deadlock’s concurrent-player record.

The latest figure builds on the previous high of 275,452 players recorded with Deadman Danny. That jump already marked a sizeable step up; Violet has now carried the game beyond the 300,000-player threshold.

A turnaround for Deadlock

The latest peak is notable against Deadlock’s earlier player-count swings. When public playtesting began in 2024, more than 171,000 players tried the game. Interest later fell to around 19,000 before gradually recovering to about 60,000, according to GosuGamers.

The earlier Old Gods, New Blood update introduced six heroes, including Rem, Silver and Venator, but did not beat the game’s all-time concurrent-player record when it became available. City Never Sleeps has proved more effective at bringing players back, with its successive hero releases driving new highs. Deadlock’s earlier player-count milestone offers a useful comparison with the latest surge.

Nurse Harrow is next

Nurse Harrow, the sixth and final hero in City Never Sleeps, is scheduled to arrive on Tuesday, 20 October, at 2:00 p.m. PDT. With one release left in the lineup, another record is possible before the update’s hero campaign wraps up.
