There’s been a lot of discussion about Grand Theft Auto 6 facing another delay. This would follow the pattern of Rockstar’s previous release, Red Dead Redemption 2, also missing multiple announced release dates before coming out.
However, the CEO of parent company Take-Two, Strauss Zelnick has recently weighed in on a GTA 6 release date himself, after the game was officially delayed to May 2026 earlier this year, describing his level of commitment to the amended release date as “very, very high, obviously.”
This is no doubt going to be a relief to GTA fans, even if it doesn’t rule out another delay entirely, but he also spoke about other projects that Rockstar have in the pipeline.
Rockstar’s focus on GTA 6
In that same interview, Zelnick discussed one of Rockstar’s most famous traits, setting new benchmarks of expectations in gaming. This was in relation to how the developer needs to be given time and space to achieve those goals, stating: “We try not to pump expectations. Rockstar’s whole stock and trade is to have these extraordinary expectations and still beat them. I know that’s their goal. I know it’s going to be an amazing game.”
This is in line with previous remarks Zelnick has made about the design ethos behind GTA 6, going so far as to state that Rockstar are seeking “perfection” with the release.
Rumours of other projects
The CEO also touched on other projects that Rockstar have in the works: “Rockstar does have a lot of other things going on, but [GTA 6] is of course the primary focus.”
While this is a vague statement in isolation, it does seem to corroborate leaks that have cropped up suggesting that Rockstar is working on a remaster of Grand Theft Auto 4 and a Switch 2 port of Red Dead Redemption 2, as well as potentially a next-gen upgrade for that same latter game.
The memory of the GTA trilogy
The talk of remasters will no doubt be exciting to a lot of people who are fans of Rockstar’s games – especially as some, like the next gen updates for RDR2 have been anticipated for a long time.
At the same time, many will likely remember the sour memory of Grand Theft Auto – The Trilogy – Definitive Edition.
Released in 2021, this was a remaster of Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City and San Andreas, yet it released negative reviews for its technical problems and change in art style. This will no doubt leave many wary about how Rockstar approaches future re-releases.
