Toys for Bob recently became independent, after a major split from the Microsoft-Activision-Blizzard empire. At the time, it shared hopes it would be able to continue inspiring “love, joy, and laughter for the inner child in all gamers” with its next project, which was described as being in early development. Now, we know that project will be developed in partnership with Xbox, which could hint at it being a new chapter in a beloved franchise.
“We’re excited to announce that we’ll be partnering with Xbox to publish our next new game,” the studio announced on Twitter / X. “We’re still very early in development, so you might not hear from us for a bit – but know that we’re working hard on an experience we’re so sooo inspired about! Can’t wait to share more.”
What’s that about a Spyro sequel?
This Xbox partnership, coupled with the announcement being shared on a purple-hued backdrop, has many speculating that Toys for Bob may be working on a new Spyro the Dragon project. At this stage nothing is confirmed, but it’s worth noting that before working as a Call of Duty support studio, Toys for Bob’s last decade worth of games have been defined by Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot – two classic franchises now owned by Microsoft.

Toys for Bob developed the Spyro reboot, Skylanders, and it also went on to develop the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, which remade the first three games in the series, and Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, a warmly-received sequel to the classic Crash Bandicoot trilogy. It was also responsible for Crash Team Rumble, which we only mention as evidence that Toys for Bob has been the gatekeeper of Spyro and Crash for many years.
There’s every chance this means the studio is looking to break out and try something new – and certainly, this would be an inspiring opportunity – but with Xbox on publishing duties, it’s also possible Toys for Bob could be working on the Spyro sequel that fans have begged for.
When Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time debuted in 2020, it was a revelation – a reimagining of classic Crash Bandicoot gameplay perfect for the adults who grew up playing Naughty Dog’s original adventures. It retained much of the same gameplay, but added in new elements and complexity to keep the experience engaging for its audience.
In the wake of this release, conversations about the same treatment for Spyro the Dragon arose, but no announcements popped up to meet this excitement. There is still a great appetite for a Spyro sequel, particularly following the excellent Reignited Trilogy remake for modern consoles, and Toys for Bob is well-positioned to make it happen.
For now, nothing concrete has been announced, and we’ll need to stay patient for more news. As announced, Toys for Bob’s latest game is only in the early stages of development, so it will likely be some time before we hear more about it.
