NetherRealm Studios has announced a few more tidbits about Mortal Kombat 1 during its showcase at San Diego Comic-Con 2023 (SDCC). A new trailer introduced three returning characters as fighters for the main game – and they’ll all play an integral part in the story mode as well. They are Li Mei, Tanya, and Baraka.
While Baraka has been one of the more recognisable icons of the Mortal Kombat series, with his vicious-looking teeth and the long blades protruding from his arms, Tanya and Li-Mei are slightly more obscure, debuting during the 3D era of the series.

Li Mei first appeared in the PS2-era Mortal Kombat games, and was also a staple of that era, though like Tanya, was also relegated to story mode cameos until now. She fights using hand-to-hand techniques, supplemented by sorcery-style magical abilities.
Additionally, it was revealed that Darrius, yet another PS2-era Mortal Kombat staple, will be making a return as a Kameo Fighter. Kameo Fighters are a separate roster of characters who can be chosen to assist your primary fighter with several techniques.
In addition to these new character announcements, NetherRealm Studios also revealed the additional characters that will be introduced to the game in the optional Kombat Pack add-on content for Mortal Kombat 1.
They are:
- Peacemaker (DC Comics’ The Suicide Squad film and Peacemaker TV series)
- Omni-Man (Robert Kirkman’s Invincible comic book and animated series)
- Homelander (Amazon’s series adaptation of The Boys)
Returning Mortal Kombat characters in the Kombat Pack include
- Quan Chi
- Ermac
- Takeda Takahashi
These characters were previously revealed in a leak stemming from an errant listing on Amazon Italy.
Mortal Kombat 1 is slated for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Windows PC, and Nintendo Switch on 19 September 2023. A beta will arrive in August 2023.
