Since Final Fantasy 7 Remake blew everybody’s expectations out of the water in early 2020, fans have clamoured to hear more about the upcoming sequel. While Square Enix promised the ambitious remake would take place over several blockbuster games, it’s fair to say fans didn’t expect just how good the first entry would be – or that it would end on such a tantalising cliffhanger. We’ve yet to see anything about the next chapter in the series, but that could change shortly.
During a recent livestream celebrating the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 7‘s initial Japanese release, Yoshinori Kitase, director of the original game, confirmed fans would get their first glimpses at Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 sometime later in 2022, more than two years after Remake launched.
‘We just started the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy 7, so we want to celebrate and get fans excited,’ Kitase said, via translator PushDustIn and VGC. ‘So within the next 12 months we want to share some information.’
Unfortunately, that was all that was revealed during the presentation. There was no current indication of how far the game is in development, or when fans can expect it to arrive.
While the recent success of battle royale game Final Fantasy 7 The First Soldier was celebrated during the livestream, and Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis was also brought up, the long-awaited Remake sequel was unfortunately absent beyond Kitase’s comments.
At the very least, it’s great fans will hear more before the end of the year – but with the 25th anniversary of the classic game now in full swing, many expected more tangible news.
Given there was such a long time between the first trailer for Final Fantasy 7 Remake in 2015 and the game’s eventual release in 2020, there’s fear that Remake Part 2 could still be several years away. The polish and scale of the game warrants a long time in development, but fans may not be so patient for the next instalment.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 2 is expected to get its first showing in 2022, although we don’t know whether it’ll be a teaser, a trailer, or something more promising. Keep an eye out for more news sometime later in the year.
