It’s July 1st, a national holiday in Canada as the country celebrates the day it was created back in 1867, but Canadian Nintendo Switch fans might not feel like celebrating.
Nintendo apparently didn’t get the national holiday memo, as the company announced price increases are coming to Canada for Nintendo Switch Online and its old consoles.
Thankfully, Canadians have avoided price hikes on the new Nintendo Switch 2 console while their neighbours in America continue to face the looming fear of tariffs and the potential ramifications they may bring.
However, Canadians are going to see price changes to the Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, physical and digital Nintendo Switch games and Nintendo Switch accessories.
Nintendo also announced that Canada will see price increases to other Nintendo products, including amiibo figures and Nintendo Switch Online memberships.
One Reddit user found the new online membership prices on the eShop have gone up by as much as 20%.
These price increases and changes are supposedly based on “market conditions.”
Despite this, Nintendo stressed that these Canadian pricing updates won’t affect the company’s new console, with no planned pricing updates to the Nintendo Switch 2 system, accessories or software.
This will include new games which aren’t exactly cheap as the upcoming Pokémon Legends Z-A, available to pre-order for CA$84.99, which is around $62 US Dollars or £45 British pounds.
Nintendo will be hyper-aware of gamers’ reactions to the pricing of new generation games after significant backlash following the announcement of Mario Kart World’s pricing.
Getting the price right will be crucial as more first-party titles are added to the Nintendo Switch 2, like the aforementioned Pokémon Legends Z-A or Donkey Kong Bananza which is confirmed to be made by the Mario Odyssey team.
