New God of War game revealed, and Kratos isn’t the main character

If you’ve been pining for a bit more God of War hacking and slashing, you’ll be pleased to know that Santa Monica Studio has announced a new mainline game in the franchise is on the way — God of War Laufey.

The twist, however, is that you won’t be playing as Kratos this time, and instead, it is focused on his wife, Faye (Laufey).

God of War Laufey puts Faye in the spotlight

If you’re a little confused as to how Faye is ‘alive’, well, technically, she isn’t. The game will take place in Everywhen, the afterlife of the gods, post-pyre funeral that opened 2018’s God of War.

This afterlife of the gods is where magic begins and returns, bringing together gods and creatures from various mythologies. Naturally, because this is God of War, not everyone is exactly welcoming, and you’ll need to fend off a plethora of otherworldly beings.

Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that Faye will have to fight through this dangerous new realm to protect the plans she put in place for Kratos and Atreus. Two of the gods already shown in the initial footage are Sekhmet and Begtse, both of whom appear to be less than thrilled about her sudden arrival.

The meaty and visceral combat does return but this time it is also set to feel both familiar and fresh.

Laufey builds on the modern God of War combat system while injecting some of the more fluid, aerial DNA of the Greek-era games. As the Golden Hand of the Jötnar, Faye embraces magic more than the skeptical Kratos, allowing access to powerful soul-based abilities, including the power to detach enemies’ souls from their bodies and use them in combat.

There was sadly no release date shared for God of War Laufey, but the fact we got a whopping 20 minutes of footage does bode well. While we won’t be seeing it launch in 2026, 2027 could be on the cards since it has certainly been in development for some time already.
