Disney Lorcana: Wilds Unknown review – Pixar has landed

The latest release for Disney Lorcana is finally here, and we had the chance to check out some of the new products that are now available at retail.

Wilds Unknown takes the Disney Lorcana game somewhere it has never been before: to the land of Pixar.

New keywords, new deck building opportunities

New cards from the worlds of Brave, The Incredibles, and Toy Story are bringing new keywords and deck-building opportunities like never before. Whether you build a deck around the new ‘Toy’ keyword or the ‘Supers’ keyword, the cards you will be using in those decks will come almost exclusively from this release.

What makes these two new keywords so unique is how focused they are. In previous Lorcana releases, you would mix and match characters across multiple franchises to create a specific type of deck. Perhaps you aimed for a deck themed around princesses, or one that allowed you to sing a lot of songs. These generic keywords give you tons of choices for building decks, which actually makes deck building more difficult, because there are just too many card combinations to think about. For most people, it’s too much work and stress to really make an effort.

Wilds Unknown fixes that, at least a bit. While you will still need to take into consideration your limit of two different color ink types, Wilds Unknown will have you stacking a ‘Toy’ specific deck full of Toy Story characters, and a ‘Supers’ deck will be full of characters from The Incredibles. What makes these easier to build is that all the cards are coming from one set.

A good place to jump into Lorcana

Being able to build a really good ‘Toy’ or ‘Supers’ deck from this set makes Wilds Unknown a fantastic place for new Lorcana players to jump in.

As previously alluded to, building a princess deck in the past required 2 or 3 sets of cards to be released to find cards that worked well together. To build a deck based on Toy Story or Incredibles – and a really good deck at that – only requires this set. This makes Wilds Unknown a wonderful starting spot for new Lorcana players, as past sets will not be required to build a good deck around these newer keywords.

Once you really begin diving into the new cards, you will also see how much theming has been poured into this set. Woody, for example, provides extra defense to all Toy cards in play – he is the sheriff after all – while toy-destruction-expert, Sid, can banish toys from the play area to earn lore (points). This is a really well thought-out release, and fans of Toy Story, Brave and The Incredibles are in for a real treat.

Other products being released

Ravensburger has released a number of products alongside Wilds Unknown, some of which we are familiar with and one that is brand new. A few new playmats are available with this set, featuring characters like Goofy, Rapunzel and Merida. I do wish Ravensburger would release playmats with zones printed on the mat for new players, like GameGenic does for Star Wars Unlimited.

There is also a brand new Illumineers Trove box, which I always recommend as a purchase with each new set release. The box is great for storing hundreds of cards, and comes with 6 damage dice, a lore counter, and ink-type card dividers. The lore counters are especially worth it in my opinion, as they are preferable to using the mobile app or the thin, poor-quality tokens. Each Illumineers Trove also includes 8 packs of cards.

The big change with this release is the brand new two-player starter set. This includes two ready-to-use decks, tokens, and a rulebook. Each Lorcana set in the past used to have two, separately packaged starter decks that included a sealed pack of cards as well; although I miss getting the extra pack of cards, this is a much better way of giving new Lorcana players everything they need in one package, at a slightly lower price.

The most focused release to date

Wilds Unknown is the most focused Disney Lorcana release so far, and creates a great opportunity for new players to jump into the game. While it still might be hard to build competition-level decks from one set, Wilds Unknown is perfect for casual Disney Lorcana players, new to the game or not.

What you need to know

Is this the first set to include Disney Pixar characters?

Yes, prior to the release of Wilds Unknown, Disney Lorcana exclusively used The Walt Disney Company characters; Pixar was introduced in this set for the first time.

Is Wilds Unknown a good set to get started with?

If you are looking for a contained experience, Wilds Unknown is a great starting place for new players. Just using the cards included in this set will provide a number of great deck-building options.

Is the two-player starter set worth purchasing for longtime Disney Lorcana fans?

I would say no. The two-player starter set is great for brand-new players, but the decks themselves don’t contain enough unique or hard-to-get cards to make purchasing them worth it. Money is better spent buying single cards from your local game store, or booster packs for that matter.
