Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls has yet to announce an official release date, with fans only having a vague placement in 2026 to speculate on. The game was first announced just last month during the June 2025 PlayStation State of Play, and instantly captured the attention of fighting game fans around the world. Now, those very same fans may get to take the game for a spin sooner than expected.
Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls‘ announcement trailer was jaw-dropping for a number of reasons; from a Gundam-inspired Iron Man design, to the almost-ridiculous 4v4 format of the battles. Tag fighters are one of the most beloved fighting game subgenres, but stacking four characters in each team is almost unheard of. Thankfully, we’ll only have to wait about a week to see if this ambitious concept will pan out.
Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls Featured at Biggest Fighting Game Tournament of the Year
Evo is the biggest fighting game event in the world, especially since the fighting game community has undergone a renaissance in recent years. Beginning on August 1st in Las Vegas, Evo 2025 is quite literally right around the corner. PlayStation has announced that fans can also expect new developer insights on August 1st, with a livestream beginning at 8 PM featuring members of both Arc System Works and Marvel Games ready to weigh in.
Players who try out the game have been promised a collectible pin, which will presumably be in fairly limited stock. If you’re out to take home a pin, you should probably visit the Arc System Works booth sooner than later. Likewise, the aforementioned developer livestream should be required reading, as it’s bound to give players the inside scoop on the primary mechanics of Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls.
Pros and Cons of Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls’ Evo Debut
Evo attendees will gain access to an early build of Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, which will only feature six playable characters and one stage to duke it out on. This is a bit of a letdown, as a limited roster inevitably means many players will be forced to use the exact same lineup for their team. However, this is made up for slightly by the composition of available characters, which includes: Captain America, Doctor Doom, Iron Man, Ms. Marvel, Star Lord, and Storm.
One does have to wonder why developers wouldn’t opt to include at least eight characters in this demo, so that players could feasibly build teams with no overlap. In fairness, this was likely just a simple matter of additional characters not being ready at this time. Still, if you’re a fan of Ghost Rider and Spider-Man (like I am), it’s understandable why you might be a little sad to see them miss out.
Still, distance does make the heart grow fonder. It’s equally likely that developers only want to give players a small taste of what’s to come, so that hype can continue to build until the game’s eventual release. As Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls reveals more members of its launch roster, one can assume any such character with the spotlight on them will be accessible in future demos. Depending on whether Fighting Souls releases earlier or later in the year, it’s even possible the game will be back at Evo 2026.
