Warner Bros. release long-awaited Mortal Kombat 2 movie trailer

Will Mortal Kombat 2 be better than first film?

The first Mortal Kombat film was met with criticism from both the gaming and film community for very different reasons.

Despite the mixed reviews it got, Mortal Kombat was a huge hit in cinemas on its release with the film grossing over $120million on just a $20million budget.

The film’s sequel has much higher expectations than the first though with over triple the budget at $68million.

Film producer, Todd Garner, explained that the new film has ‘more scope’ than the first as the creators know what kind of reaction to expect this time round.

“When we made the [first] movie, Warner Bros. didn’t know how people were going to react. They didn’t know. We didn’t have a huge budget to do whatever we wanted to do,” Garner said.

“We certainly couldn’t compete with the huge superhero movies by any stretch of the imagination, so we were limited by the scale and scope of that movie because they didn’t really know what they had.”

Garner also said that fighting scenes are “quite frankly expensive” to film, but with a much higher budget for the new title, filmmakers could delve more into the game’s thrilling and graphic fight sequences.

Who is starring in the new Mortal Kombat movie?

Mortal Kombat 2 will hit UK cinemas on 24th October 2025.

The film will star popular actor from ‘The Boys’ TV series, Karl Urban, as Johnny Cage.

Lewis Tan and Hiroyuki Sanada will both reprise their respective roles from the first film as Cole Young and Scorpion.

Other characters who are reportedly getting a callback in the sequel are Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden and Joe Taslim as Bi-Han/Sub-Zero.

Max Huang’s role as Kung Lao is also listed as part of the film – despite his character dying in the original Mortal Kombat. Another supposedly dead character returning is Josh Lawson as Kano.
