Jacob has been gaming since the original Game Boy was placed in his hands. Due to his passion for the field, writing talent, and a keen eye for SEO, he made his games journalism debut in 2019. When he isn’t playing the latest titles, he is tinkering with retro tech to bring it into the modern era.
Every year, there always seems to be a small handful of games that go absolutely wild thanks to streamers and content creators showing how fun they are to the masses.
2026 hasn’t really had any standouts in this regard, until now. MECCHA CHAMELEON, from seemingly solo dev lemorion_1224, has taken the world by storm, hitting new player count peaks every day since its launch on June 10.
MECCHA CHAMELEON is 2026’s biggest surprise hit
Hide-and-seek-like titles are always a fun experience. We’ve seen the likes of GMod’s Prop Hunt being the standout in the field, with other games such as Call of Duty bringing it in as a mode to capitalize on the popularity.
MECCHA CHAMELEON, however, takes the original concept of hide-and-seek and allows for more depth, giving you the ability to ‘create’ hiding spaces through recoloring your little man. This twist makes for absolute absurdity, perfect for content creators to capitalize on these moments.
We’ve seen the likes of Shroud, TheBurntPeanut, Jynxzi, and xQc all streaming the game, bringing hundreds of thousands of eyeballs onto it. Due to this, the MECCHA CHAMELEON player counts have absolutely skyrocketed since it was released, more so than any other small indie game this year.

On its first day, the game peaked at just over 20k active players, with steady rises throughout its first week. But, as of Sunday, June 21, it has reached 340k, which is a crazy figure, cementing it within the top 50 most played games ever on Steam.
It’s also currently the number 1 top seller on Steam, and coming in at just $5.99, it’s pretty likely these peaks aren’t going to dwindle too much, even during the weekdays, where typically player counts take a big hit.

As for how long MECCHA CHAMELEON is going to maintain these levels, though, remains to be seen.
Similar popularity blow-ups can last just a few weeks due to those aforementioned streamers dropping games when they get bored, but since the core hide-and-seek gameplay is so enjoyable, paired with essentially becoming an artiste in the process, the average Joe will be having fun way after things begin to plateau.
