Black Ops 1 & 2 remaster hopes rise after fans dig into PlayStation server files

Everyone is wanting Call of Duty to go back to the glory days, and it appears someone, somewhere, has been listening to everyone’s prayers, with files of two older games now appearing on PlayStation servers.

These are Black Ops 1 & 2, which a large portion of the fanbase regard as two of the best entries in the franchise, so hype is certainly starting to build.

But why have they made their way onto the servers all of a sudden? Are they standard ports? Remasters? Let’s dig into the latest.

What is going on with Black Ops 1 & 2 on the PS Store?

After initially being spotted back in May, thanks to South Korea rating the games, things appear to be unravelling with Black Ops 1 & 2. Those with the know-how have been digging into PKG code and metadata to uncover a secret or two.

The latest info we have is that there are both remaster and PS5-enhanced flags inside the PKGs, both pointing to the fact that these are not simple like-for-like ports and instead might end up being upgraded versions.

What’s more, additional languages that were not in the originals have also been uncovered, again suggesting tweaks have been made.

And finally, there’s a little line in there stating that the two games have been worked on since August 2019, which means if they launch soon, that’s a total of seven years of dev time.

However, all this being said, it is pretty unlikely that whatever Activision studio has been working on these behind the scenes has been pumping huge amounts of resources into a full-blown remaster.

Instead, what is more likely is that improvements to those base games have been made, changing little things here and there. Who knows, maybe multiplayer lobbies have been fixed enough so that not every man and their dog is getting hacked.

Hopefully, since the files are there and waiting for someone to simply push the button, the two games will likely be dropping soon, and all secrets will be revealed.
