Lemorion_1224, the solo developer and publisher of MECCHA CHAMELEON, has revealed a major sales milestone. The game, announced earlier this morning, has surpassed 500,000 copies sold on Steam. The dev posted an update to the Steam community page, thanking players for their support.
MECCHA CHAMELEON releases sales figures, and announces an update is coming soon
Alongside the sales announcement, two new updates are scheduled for release later this week. The first introduces a points system that rewards Hiders for how long they manage to stay within a Hunter’s line of sight, adding a fresh layer of risk and reward to the game’s core hide-and-seek loop. The second is a brand-new official map, giving both Hiders and Seekers a new environment to test their painting and searching skills.
For those unfamiliar, MECCHA CHAMELEON is a multiplayer party game where Hiders start as plain white characters and must use an in-game colour palette to paint themselves to blend into their surroundings. Meanwhile, Seekers race against the clock to spot them. It’s a simple premise, but it gives a bit more creativity and tactics to the usual witch hunt / hide and seek party genre games out there.
What makes the 500,000 sales figure particularly notable is just how quickly it’s been reached. The game launched with a peak of over 20,000 concurrent players and racked up well over 100,000 Twitch viewers around launch. It also did that in under two days, with the game releasing on June 10th too. To go from launch to half a million copies sold in the space of roughly two days is a huge result for a solo-developed casual game. The ‘friendslop’ games often live and die by how viral they can be, and by the looks of things, its creative twists have certainly helped it on that front.
It also helps that the game is pretty accessible, with a 20% launch discount adding to the FOMO on the deal. And it’s also very cheap even without the deal, as the base RRP is £5.29. Let’s be real, that’s cheaper than a pint in town.
With new content already on the way just days after launch, it looks like lemorion_1224 is moving quickly to keep players engaged while the game rides its early momentum. I can imagine with the weekend coming up, where many more players are going to have a chance to dabble, the sales will only continue to climb. Not bad considering the daily news cycle.
