It feels surreal to get to write about some interesting Guild Wars news once again, this time covering the first official vlog of Guild Wars 3. The vlog in question introduces us to the world of Guild Wars 3, now set in Orr, the land of Gods and Charr. Lore nuts from GW2 and 1 are aware of the legacy of Orr, with Orr sinking beneath the waves after the Charr’s invasion through GW2”s extended lore, alongside having to fight back against Zhaitan, a dragon originating from Orr.
Guild Wars 3’s Orr is set 1,000 years before it was sunk, with a focus on high fantasy magic.
The developers and designers did us a solid letting us know how the setting of Guild Wars 3 will work. We knew it was set in a different period, but we got confirmation on the vlog that it is set roughly 1000 years before the events of Guild Wars 1. It’s a way for the devs to make Guild Wars 3, without ruining the room for Guild Wars 1 and 2 updates to continue as the devs continue those eras of stories and continuity.
Set 1000 years before the first game, Guild Wars 3 arrives in Orr, which the devs describe as a tense, but golden era of the continent. There are several guilds occupying the lands, with the gods giving magic to the guilds it trusts to protect the land, its creatures, magic and more that live and dwell in it. We know we play a Vaelwarden, one of the guilds occupying the land, which is spread few and far between. That creates an opening for other guilds and threats to enter the fray.
We also got more confirmation that Guild Wars 3 is way more high-fantasy than GW2 or 1. GW2 featured more technology in the game, with skyships, fabricated bases, largely due to the Asura race. It looks like they are in GW1, based on snippets we’ve seen, but their intellect doesn’t look to be making an impact on this land. Instead, the magic and high fantasy, linked to the gods, will take more shape in the game.
Blog post talks gameplay depth with a focus on Orr as the playable continent
We also got a blog post, linked here, which talks about the actual level design of the game. The devs stated that rather than having a wide world, as it did in GW2, they want to do a deeper and more layered world around Orr for now. That way, there’s going to be a lot of exploration in the level, specifically, encouraging you to find and interact with the new movement-based features. Apparently, these systems are all designed with depth in mind.
Outside of that, the vlog showed off some concept artwork of creatures, races, and some other bits and pieces. We didn’t really get a glimpse of any gameplay or features, other than action combat meets movement impact like during the reveal. So, there’s certainly room for the guilds to go to war in the story, PvP, or other content. We also don’t really know the full races, classes, or other features coming to the game either. These will more likely start popping up over the next year or so with vlogs here and there.
Not bad considering they only revealed the game officially at Summer Games Fest last week.
