Adam has been writing about video games since 2014 and board games since 2018. If he's not rooting for the Toronto Maple Leafs or Toronto FC, he definitely has a controller in his hand - probably playing on a Nintendo platform - or is sitting at a table playing a board game. Adam also has firm opinions on a few key topics: there are much better board games than Settlers of Catan, and Nintendo doesn't need to compete with Sony and Microsoft.
A brand new set is coming soon for Disney Lorcana players. Attack of the Vine is just around the corner, with local game stores having stock available on July 17th, and big box stores having stock available on July 24th.
With the introduction of Pixar characters in the last set, Wilds Unknown, Ravensburger is building on that with even more Pixar in Attack of the Vine.
That is not the only reason to pick up this new set, though, as brand new combos are here with the new Team classification, and players might be able to dust off those old Chapter 2 Floodborne decks.
Ravensburger is leaning hard into Pixar
Wilds Unknown was one of my favourite Disney Lorcana releases to date, and that’s because of my great love for Pixar. I wondered if the team would continue introducing Pixar characters in future sets, or if we would have to wait a while to get our hands on more cards from the wonderfully animated world.
Spoilers, you won’t have to wait. Woody and Buzz are back in Attack of the Vine, along with other characters from Toy Story, Monster’s Inc., Turning Red, and The Incredibles. We talked at length in our Wilds Unknown review about how awesome the new Toy and Supers keywords were, and for those building decks based on that, there are tons of new cards to take advantage of.

Dusting off those old cards
Like any collectible trading card game, new sets often render old sets unusable as they tend to underperform against new and better mechanics. Floodborn characters were introduced right when Disney Lorcana came to life, but new cards in Attack of the Vine give new life to these old cards. Have a great Chapter 2 deck you want to dust off and alter? Attack of the Vine has you covered.
Even if you don’t have old decks you want to play around with, this commitment to old keywords should be a positive sign for hardcore Disney Lorcana fans. If they are willing to do this with Floodborn characters, they likely will be looking to do it with other characters as well.
Plenty of new ideas to dig into
The Hunny keyword, which we saw previously, but only in one or two cards, I believe, is probably the most intriguing new addition to Attack of the Vine. It could be my lifelong love of Winnie the Pooh, but more likely it’s because with a specific Christopher Robin card (Hunny Sage), you can actually break the game’s two-ink only rule, and can have Hunny cards from any color in your deck. While I have yet to successfully create a Hunny-themed deck – which means it’s probably not as good as I want it to be – it’s still a fun keyword to build a deck around, especially when you get to break the rules.

What most people are going to get excited about, though, are the new Team cards. Team cards depict two characters side-by-side on a single card, such as Sulley and Boo or Dash and Violet Par. These cards can be Combo Shifted onto cards of the same name; so you could put Sulley and Boo: Scare Buddies on top of a Sulley Card or a Boo Card, or both!
Two cards beneath the Team card is always better than one, but regardless of how you get these cards into play, things will happen based on the number of cards beneath the Team card. It might be drawing a card per card you covered, or getting extra lore.
These cards are incredibly powerful, but also incredibly costly. You will, afterall, be removing two cards from the field to play this one single card, so it takes some careful planning to pull off effectively.
Another fantastic set, Lorcana is not slowing down

I’ve wanted to set my love for Disney aside when I review these new sets, and while I’ve had issues with some sets in the past, it appears that Ravensburger is moving forward with Disney Lorcana in a really positive way.
Even though I did find a lot of cards in this set that were not all that valuable in my opinion, the set as a whole is incredibly strong. It might take a bit of time to fully see how truly great these cards are, but on the surface, Attack of the Vine is another great release.
