The Order: 1886 Sequel Was Planned, But Never Greenlit

Ready at Dawn, the studio behind the controversial PlayStation 4 launch title The Order: 1886, fully intended on making a sequel.

The Order: 1886 Studio Co-Founder Reveals Sequel Intentions

Speaking to The Game Business, studio co-founder Ru Weerasuriya commented on the game’s reception, stating, “I had, in my head, the story for the second and third one. We had all of that prepped. But unfortunately, what happened, happened.”

Reviews at the time suggested that The Order: 1886 would benefit from multiplayer to enhance its appeal and mitigate the impact of its short runtime and unfinished story. Weerasuriya notes that multiplayer was under development in The Order’s first year, but they ran out of time and money to finish it. “It was fun,” he says.

However, Weerasuriya had every intention of including multiplayer in a sequel. Unfortunately, that second game wasn’t to be, as Sony decided it would not happen.

Could an Order: 1886 Sequel Ever Release?

It’s unlikely that we’ll ever get an Order: 1886 sequel. After all, Ready at Dawn became a VR studio later on and was eventually acquired by Meta to develop VR titles for its Quest virtual reality headset.

That said, a sequel isn’t up to Ready at Dawn, but rather Sony itself. The PlayStation publisher owns the IP, as revealed to VG247 all the way back in 2015. Ready at Dawn no longer exists, anyways, as it was sadly shut down last year.

It’s not impossible that Sony assigns another developer to the IP. They’ve already done similar with Bend Studios taking over Uncharted for its PSP iteration. Ultimately, it’s up to the executives at Sony to make the decision.

Weerasuriya probably won’t play a role in the development of a sequel, either. While speaking to The Game Business, Weerasuriya mentioned his new studio, Atlantis Studio, and its focus on smaller AA games:

“We are a little more focused on the, let’s say, AA-type game and budget. I don’t think we want to grow beyond 25, 30 people. We want to make games that have impact but, at the same time, doesn’t feel like we’re overwhelmed. Take the time to ship them.”

Either way, Ready at Dawn lives on in its creations. Not just The Order: 1886, but also the PSP spin-off of Jak and Daxter, simply named Daxter, alongside the two PSP God of War games: Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta.
