Er is meteen ook een gratis demo beschikbaar op Steam. En alsof dat nog niet genoeg is, heeft Bohemia ook de volledige broncode van de engine op GitHub gezet.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voor fans van militaire simulaties is dat een feest van herkenning: <em>Operation Flashpoint<\/em> was namelijk een van de games die ooit het tactische sandbox-genre groot maakte. Zonder die game had de <em>Arma<\/em>-serie er waarschijnlijk heel anders uitgezien.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Een klassieker klaarstomen voor moderne pc&rsquo;s<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Arma<\/em> speelt zich af in een alternatieve versie van de Koude Oorlog. Door de nieuwe dreiging van Rusland is dat weer een hot thema voor spellen; ook de recente titels <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameshub.com\/nl\/nieuws\/game-ontwikkeling\/vecht-samen-met-40-teamleden-in-de-cold-war-shooter-83\/\"><strong>&lsquo;83<\/strong><\/a> en <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameshub.com\/nl\/nieuws\/game-ontwikkeling\/hell-let-loose-vietnam-open-beta-kampt-met-prestatieproblemen\/\"><strong>Hell Let Loose: Vietnam<\/strong><\/a> spelen zich tijdens dit conflict af.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De remaster moet de game soepel laten draaien op moderne systemen. Denk aan ondersteuning voor breedbeeldschermen en verbeterde compatibiliteit met nieuwe hardware. Een releasedatum voor de volledige game is er nog niet, maar de demo laat wel alvast zien hoe de vernieuwde versie aanvoelt.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voor wie het verhaal achter de game niet kent: Bohemia en Codemasters gingen jaren geleden uit elkaar. Codemasters hield de naam <em>Operation Flashpoint<\/em>, terwijl Bohemia doorging met de technologie erachter en daar later <em>Arma<\/em> van maakte.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vernieuwde engine, vertrouwde gameplay<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De demo draait nog steeds op de originele Poseidon Engine, maar technisch is er veel vernieuwd. De code is gemoderniseerd en draait nu native in 64-bit op Windows en Linux.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wat de game vroeger zo bijzonder maakte, was de vrijheid. Geen smalle, lineaire levels, maar grote open gebieden waarin je zelf bepaalde hoe je een missie aanpakte. Dat gevoel wil Bohemia behouden. Je kunt in de demo de bekende eilanden Everon, Malden en Kolguyev verkennen, voertuigen gebruiken en missies spelen.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voor modders is misschien nog wel het beste nieuws dat de bestanden uit de demo mogen worden gebruikt als basis voor nieuwe content. Dat betekent dat modders assets kunnen bekijken, aanpassen en hergebruiken voor eigen projecten. Omdat de <em>Arma<\/em>-community altijd sterk leunde op mods, is dit een geweldige stap.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bohemia heeft daarnaast ook de volledige source code op GitHub gezet, inclusief documentatie. Daardoor kunnen ontwikkelaars en hobbyisten de code bestuderen, aanpassen en zelfs verbeteringen voorstellen. En voor een game van 25 jaar oud is dat behoorlijk uniek.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Waarom deze game ertoe doet<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Arma: Cold War Assault<\/em> is meer dan een oude shooter. De game had veel invloed op latere titels zoals <em>DayZ<\/em>, mods voor <em>Unreal<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/codemasters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>e-sportsfavoriet <em>Counter-Strike<\/em><\/strong><\/a> en veel andere spellen met battle royale-modussen. De combinatie van grote maps, realistische gameplay en sterke mod-support maakte de game destijds bijzonder. Veel moderne militaire en survivalgames bouwen nog steeds voort op die idee&euml;n.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deze remaster is meer dan een simpele grafische upgrade. Met een gratis demo en open broncode geeft Bohemia fans en modders veel om mee te werken.
