The PlayStation State of Play in June 2022 had a number of great reveals, one of which was a closer look at PlayStation VR2 title, Horizon: Call of the Mountain from Guerrilla Games and partner studio, Firespite.

A side story to Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West, Call of the Mountain will put you into the role of new protagonist Ryas, who just so happens to be an expert at climbing and archery, according to a PlayStation Blog post.

The extended gameplay trailer showed VR actions like using bows for combat and grappling hooks for climbing as Ryas made their way through Horizon’s lush post-apocalyptic world in first-person. Encounters with Horizon’s towering mechanical enemies look like they could be particularly arresting (and terrifying) in VR.

Additional details from PlayStation reveal that using materials to craft gear will be a mechanic, and that Ryas will encounter both new and familiar Horizon characters, including the protagonist of the two mainline games, Aloy.

Alongside the main story, Call of the Mountain will also featured another mode called ‘River Ride’. From the description, it seems this will be a more passive mode geared towards those who haven’t had much experience with VR, where you simply sit on a boat and enjoy the beautiful Horizon scenery.

Additionally, Guerilla used the reveal of Call of the Mountain to also announce that Horizon: Forbidden West would receive a major update which includes New Game Plus mode, an Ultra Hard difficulty mode, armour transmogrification, and a number of additional quality of life features.

The Horizon Forbidden West update is available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 now.

No release date was shared for Horizon: Call of the Mountain, but we assume it’ll align closely with the release of the PlayStation VR2 headset.
