Lead/Principal Game Designer, New World

We are looking for a Lead Console Designer to join our New World team in Orange County. New World is an open world MMO set in an alternate version of the 17th Century where players will fight for survival as they explore and conquer the mysterious island of Aeternum.
As the Lead Console Designer, you have a proven track record designing and balancing game systems, content, user interface, and user interaction for gamepads and current generation consoles. You have knowledge of game design theory and tools pipelines. You possess strong communication skills and production sensibilities. You have the talent to produce and implement high quality work. You want to create delightful and surprising experiences for our players. You are able to work independently and are comfortable taking and providing direction. You’ll share your knowledge while working within a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary team of designers, artists, and programmers. It will be a combination of your experience, and an understanding of MMO/RPG design for gamepads and current generation consoles that will define success. We are looking for individuals that are highly motivated and passionate for games.
Key job responsibilities What You’ll Do • Work closely with the Game Director and Creative Director to own and lead the console and gamepad specific design of a multi-platform massively multiplayer game. • Advocate for the unique capabilities and requirements of console platforms to create a game console players love. • Generate documentation to clearly communicate ideas and goals to a cross-discipline internal team and remote partners. • Work with all departments on the scheduling and integration of designs, as well as feature development goals and execution. • Develop data-gathering methods for game balancing and tuning through focus testing, then implement changes based on the data. • Work closely with QA to ensure quality throughout the product lifecycle. • Design, learn, and optimize new tools and workflows with minimal supervision.
Basic Qualifications
• 7+ years of game design experience in a relevant role. • Shipped 2+ console titles as a game designer in a leadership role. • Experience with modern 3d engines and editors in console game production.
Preferred Qualifications
• Encyclopedic knowledge of console games and current trends. • Proven experience in a professional game production pipeline. • Experience designing console user interfaces and user experiences. • Experience in AAA multi-platform game development. • Comfortable working in game editors and understanding engine/game constraints and opportunities. • Strong methodology and problem-solving ability, with focus on the player experience. • Able to accept and give constructive criticism and maintain a professional attitude. • Independently self-motivated, team player with excellent communication skills. • Experience creating and balancing game play with a holistic, “get your hands dirty” approach. • Passionate gamer with knowledge of current commercial game titles.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $122,800/year in our lowest geographic market up to $228,400/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
